Craniosacral
for Healthy Eyes
Amblyopia
occurs when one eye has much better focus than the other, which may be due to:
·Imbalance in the muscles that position the
eye
·Misalignment in the eye: Crossed eyes or wall
eyes
·Difference in the sharpness of vision between
eyes
·Any problem with one eye can deprive the
child of a clear vision in that eye
Patching of only the ‘good’
eye for extended periods reinforces separation between the eyes (and
brain) and creates psychological trauma and resistance. It is also very ineffective and the
amblyopic eye often returns to its' pre patched blurred state.
Possible Causes of Amblyopia:
1. Trauma: difficult
birth or accidents causing pressure from the cranial bones on the muscles or
nerves innervating the eyes. Fever, in rare cases a missing muscle,
spastic muscle control, nystagmus, strabismus, systemic diseases, infections,
paralysis, stroke or eye scarring.
2. Lack of stimulation (infant put in crib with vision blocked
off, breast fed on one side, or always put to lie down facing the same way, or
born with cataracts or pathology in one or both eyes.
3. Emotional, mental and physical stress causing chronic
tension in extrinsic muscles - often a sign that an aspect of the person is
split off or dissociated.
Some
optometrists will offer these solutions:
1. Glasses
with “prism” to help turn the strabismic eye straight with lenses.
2. Glasses to help the amblyopic eye “wake up”
or “turn on”
3. Patching of the “good” eye to make the “lazy” eye work
4. Surgery.
Glasses can be therapeutic tool, but they do
not in themselves enable an individual to integrate visual information from
both sides of the brain and do not ultimately strengthen, straighten or help the eyes to work together. Similarly,
surgery can attempt to straighten an eye, however it will not necessarily stay
straight, and if it does stay straight and “looks normal”, it does not mean that
the eye is fully functional or that the child will be able to achieve stereoscopic
(3D vision).
Craniosacral Therapy for amblyopia does not mean a child has one “good” eye and one “bad”
eye. Rather, both eyes typically have
reduced visual function - depth
perception, focusing and eye movements are typically lacking in both eyes, not
just the amblyopic eye. Craniosacral can help the eyes regain the fluid
nature and help the eye muscles to relax.
It is effective for releasing tension patterns or trauma in the eyes, eye
muscles, brain and nerves. This therapy
also helps the bones in your skull to realign especially the sphenoid bone that
houses the eye sockets. The misaligned
bones in the skull could be due baby being stuck in utero or to birth process
intervention using forceps or vacuum or ceasarean and concussion from a fall in infancy or childhood.
Visual perception is a big category that includes the following:
- Visual
discrimination, or “just noticeable differences”
- Visual
sequential memory – remembering a series of objects, letters or numbers
- Visual
figure ground – such as hidden pictures, or finding an object in a busy
room, or even attending to the teacher when the room is full of
distractions
- Visual
closure – seeing part of the information and inferring the rest of it.
Body
knowledge – understanding where I am in space
Bilateral
integration – coordinated movement of both sides of
the body
Space
awareness – understanding where things are in space
Eye-hand
coordination – letting vision guide your movement,
which is essential for proper handwriting and sports activities
Vestibular
/ balance – helping the visual system be the “top dog” of the
vestibular triad, which helps with motion sickness, car sickness and head
injury rehabilitation
